High Alumina Cement for Structural Use - IS 6452:1989

BIS Certification for High Alumina Cement for Structural Use - IS 6452:1989

1. Introduction to IS 6452:1989 – High Alumina Cement (HAC) for Structural Use

High Alumina Cement (HAC) is a cement for special purpose, manufactured by fusing or sintering of aluminous and calcareous raw materials and grinding also that results clinker to a fine powder. This cement is characterized by high early strength, high heat of hydration and a strong resistance for chemical attacks.

High Alumina Cement as per IS 6452:1989 covers specifically for structural applications in cold regions (areas with temperatures consistently at or below 18°C). Refractory cement or factory cement is not included under this standard.

As per IS 6452, the total content of alumina must not be less than 32% and the cement must meet all the prescribed chemical, physical and strength requirements.

2. Why BIS Certification Is Mandatory for High Alumina Cement

As per the (Quality Control Order) of Cement, stated that all the manufacturers of High Alumina Cement for Structural Use must obtain a BIS Licence (ISI Mark) before manufacturing, distributing or selling into India. It is notified by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the BIS act.

BIS certification ensures:

  • Compliance with IS 6452:1989
  • Consistent structural performance in cold regions
  • Verified quality of manufacturing & testing
  • Legal authorization of selling the product in India
  • Increases the trust among engineers, contractors and government buyers

7. Testing Requirements for High Alumina Cement (IS 6452)

High Alumina Cement must undergo through strict testing that are based on methods prescribed in the IS 6452.

Physical Tests

  • Fineness
  • Soundness
  • Initial Setting Time
  • Compressive Strength
  • Density and workability (as applicable)

Chemical Tests

  • Alumina content (≥ 32%)
  • Reaction tests
  • Chemical impurities
  • Loss on ignition

Testing Compliance Notes

  • Manufacturers must maintain an in-house laboratory with all required instruments.
  • All test results must match as per IS 6452 specifications before applying the ISI Mark.

8. Labelling, Marking & Packaging Requirements

Every High Alumina Cement bag must display the following:

  • ISI Mark with valid CM/L number
  • Manufacturer’s name & address
  • Batch number
