Super Sulphated Cement - IS 6909:1990

BIS Certification for Super Sulphated Cement - IS 6909:1990

1. Introduction to IS 6909:1990 - Super Sulphated Cement (SSC)

Super Sulphated Cement (SSC) is a specialized cement that is known for its low heat of hydration, high sulphate resistance and environmentally friendly production method. It contains a high percentage of granulated blast furnace slag (at least 70%), along with calcium sulphate and a small amount of clinker or Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC).

The composition, production process, quality standards, testing procedures and marking of guidelines for Super Sulphated Cement used in construction applications are all outlined in this Indian Standard IS 6909:1990.

This is widely used in:

  • Foundations that are in soils with a lot of sulphate
  • Marine constructions that are in danger of being attacked by seawater
  • Reinforced concrete pipes (RC pipes) that are buried in places where they are likely to rusted
  • Projects that don't use a lot of heat and will last a long time

2. Why BIS Certification Is Mandatory for Super Sulphated Cement

As per the (Quality Control Order) of Cement, that are issued under the BIS Act, states that all the manufacturers of Super Sulphated Cement must obtain an ISI Mark Licence before manufacturing or selling in India.

BIS Certification ensures:

  • Compliance with the requirements of this IS 6909:1990
  • Structural safety in sulphate-rich and marine environments
  • Verified quality, strength and durability of product
  • Legal authorization for market the SSC in India
  • Gaining of market acceptance in government & for infrastructure projects

7. Testing Requirements for Super Sulphated Cement (IS 6909)

Super Sulphated Cement must pass a performance series and chemical tests before certification.

Physical Tests

  • Fineness
  • Setting time (initial & final)
  • Compressive strength
  • Soundness
  • Transverse Strength Test

Chemical Tests

  • Sulphate content
  • Loss on ignition
  • Chemical impurities
  • Slag content verification

All tests must follow the methods of BIS-approved testing and manufacturers must maintain a fully equipped in-house testing laboratory.
